Delamere - "Bookmarks"
Friday 5th March 2010 at 8pm
-
Seeing your photograph (along with those of 2 Ireland Rugby players, a national broadcaster and an elite athlete) on your university bookmark is food for thought. But this is what happened to our intrepid comedian, Neil Delamere! Best known as the star of RTE's The Panel and BBC's The Blame Game, Irish comedian Neil debuts his new show, "Bookmarks". Trinity College has Oscar Wilde, Dublin City University has Neil Delamere....Hmmm.....It was a sign. Life is just a series of bookmarks, the events that highlight how far we've come and how far we've left to go. They could be anything, weddings, funerals, charges being dropped, even facing your fears (don't!).Neil considers these markers as well as how his photo appeared on the thing in the first place! Time to Explore! Oh yeah...we also get to find out how long Neil will live!

KODO -"One Earth Tour"
Thursday 18th March at 8pm
-
For nearly thirty years, Kodo has experienced the boundless potential of the ancient Japanese drum, the taiko. Inspired by the powerful natural beauty of their home on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan, Kodo infuses traditional forms with fresh global influences to create new musical expressions that are utterly unique. Since 1981, Kodo has delivered over 3200 performances in 46 countries, becoming Japan's most acclaimed performing arts group. For the past nearly three decades the One Earth Tour has been the heart and soul of Kodo's year, an ongoing voyage that has taken the group around the world several times over in a continual quest for new expression and exchange of ideas. Through these travels, Kodo meets myriad artists, both in Japan and abroad, who contribute to the group's multicultural palette and spur a perpetual evolution. In 2009 in particular, a diverse array of special projects has brought about a significant change in the group's attitude on stage. Highlights of the programme will include Chonlima, a piece not seen in recent years in Europe, which evokes the thunder of a great horse galloping across an open field at full speed. Likewise Miyake, and its tight formation of drummers crouched low to their instruments and striking horizontally, pushes the minds and bodies of the performers to their limits with its demands of strength and rhythmic precision. Quintessential Koko compositions such as O-Daiko and Yatai-Bayashi are rendered wtih such force that they can literally be felt.

Gilbert O'Sullivan
Tuesday 23rd March at 8pm
-
You may think that you know all there is to know about Gilbert O'Sullivan. That he was a huge star in the 70's and that he fought two massively important music industry legal cases. All this, however, is only the tip of the iceberg. Gilbert O'Sullivan's has sound tracked films and television shows from "Stuart Little 2", "The Simpsons" to Sofia Coppola's "The Virgin Suicides", Meera Syal's "Anita Me" and the Japanese manga cartoon "Mailson Ikkokou". Most recently "Alone Again (Naturally)" featured in the hit BBC series "Life On Mars"His songs have been covered by amongst others Andy Williams, Nina Simone, Shirley Bassey, Bobby Darin, Sarah Vaughan and more recently Har Mar Superstar and Donny Osmond. In 2004 his latest best compilation (Berry Vest of) saw him return to the top twenty. The music scene has rediscovered the long lost decade of the 70's, with bands such as The Feeling tracing a lineage back to ELO and Queen, while Ben Folds in particular has been producing the kind of lyrically clever, eloquent pop music that O'Sullivan made his own.Do not miss Gilbert O'Sullivan live in concert at UCH!
